Several entrants in a 2008 trans-oceanic sailboat race use the AstroVision data stream to assist them in charting courses for the grueling race. With Hurricane Jackie in the Caribbean Sea, fishing fleets and shipping companies use the data to find protected anchorages. In the normal course of business, commercial fisherman use the data for identification of prime fishing areas.
It is now 6:00 pm on the East Coast. The local news opens with live coverage of Hurricane Jackie, including 30 seconds of real-time video from AstroVision. The third story of the evening shows a brilliant lightning storm over Los Angeles as it is happening. Once a rare mystery, today viewers for the first time can see new pictures from AstroVision of lightning and meteorites flashing and streaking over their heads. The evening national news combines live and earlier AstroVision data with ground camera pictures of the dramatic major eruption of an Indonesian volcano.
